Texas based author Kathleen M. Rodgers’ poetry featured in New York museum

Updated Aug.3, 2015

Three of my poems from the book Because I Fly (McGraw-Hill 2002, edited by Helmut H. Reda), are featured in a new exhibit at the Cradle of Aviation Museum, Long Island, NY. Aviators, Poets and Dreamers asks the question, "Why do we fly?" and runs from July 18th through Labor Day. The exhibit will then travel to libraries across Long Island. A huge thanks to Rod Leonhard at Cradle of Aviation Museum for selecting “A Little Boy’s Dream," "The Searcher," and "To Live to Fly" for the exhibit.

What went through the minds of the children of our servicemen after the bombs dropped on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941? At least two members of the Prescott AZ chapter of the Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors who attended their luncheon meeting this month remembered that date in history.  Sirens began wailing, calling the men to duty on the island of Oahu, one of them recalled, even though it was a Sunday. One can only imagine the confusion, the fear, the wait for evacuation.

Busnell's Turtle - Covert Shores: The Story of Naval Special Forces Missions and Minisubs

Independence Day brought to mind the world’s first combat submersible. Built in 1776 during the War of Independence, Bushnell’s Turtle submersible was used in an attack on HMS Eagle on September 6th 1776. Being a history buff I cannot bring myself to buy some of the myth surrounding this undoubtedly courageous endeavor; it cannot be described as a success. My skepticism has nothing to do with being a Brit, I promise. But there’s no disputing the Turtle’s place at the start of the line for Submarine and Swimmer Delivery Vehicle (SDV) development.
