MWSA Review

In Some of the Best, author Thomas Calabrese has written a fast moving, action packed thriller that I really enjoyed reading. Set during the Vietnam War, the story is about a young marine's experiences along with a small group of other marines assigned with him in the 26th Marines. Written in the first person, the book is almost like reading someone's memoirs. However, the main character's focus on another marine of near heroic, if not mythical, stature givesthis second character nearequal billing. While the story is replete with combat scenes, the book also looks at the physical and mental hardshipsa marine faced during a tour of duty.I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys combat novels or military history.

Author's Summary

My heart is pounding so fast that I‘m afraid the others will hear it... The wheels of the chopper hit hard and the rear ramp lowers quickly. Mac is off in an instant, followed by Ward, Berkeley, Thornton, Doyle and myself. Grimsley is tugging at his rifle, his sling is hung up in the helicopter cargo straps and he’s pulling at it with all of his strength. I am directly behind Doyle running for cover when Doyle’s head explodes. There is only a red mist where his head used to be. His body takes a couple more steps and then crumples to the ground.

A voice off in the jungle screams, “Sniper, sniper, sniper!!!”
