BECAUSE YOU HAVE FLOWN
From the book Because I Fly, published by McGraw-Hill, 2002.
I wrote Because You Have Flown in 1987 as a tribute to a friend after he was permanently grounded for medical reasons. Today, I dedicate this poem to my husband, Tom. On 21 March, 2013, he will fly his last flight after flying airplanes for 43 years.
Tom,
May the Lord give you
strength
to wing out in new
directions;
to seek other horizons
far beyond the reach
of a wingtip;
to feel the solid ground
at your feet
as did the first man
millenniums ago;
to walk through this life
knowing that you’ve accomplished
more than most men
Because you have flown…
And no matter the length of a flight,
all birds must come landing
back to earth…
eventually.
