MWSA Review

In Meltdown, Francis Hamit has spun an interesting thriller about an attack on a nuclear power plant in the United States.  Two ruthless, former Soviet agents operating in the United States under assumed identities have taken it upon themselves to organize a terrorist cell and are committed to use this group to attack the power plant. On the other side, there is Maria Lockhart newly appointed head of security for the Indian Springs nuclear power plant. While Ms. Lockhart is trying to familiarize herself with the new job and to evaluate what is really necessary and what is not, she comes to appreciate the people who work with and around her and deals with the conflicting interests of security and cost control. A couple of days before the attack, the terrorists capture and interrogate a plant engineer in a final effort to perfect their plans. When the attack comes, it is large and coordinated. Hamit has filled Meltdown with interesting characters and plot twists. I definitely recommend it to all those who enjoy a good cliffhanger.

Author's Summary

A novel, set in a slightly alternative universe (for security reasons) about a terrorist attack by so-called Patriot militia on a nuclear power plant someplace in the United States between the bombing of the Oklahoma City Federal Building and the attack on the World Trade Center on 9/11/2001. The heroes of this tale are Jimmy Berger, an aging hippie and plant engineer who knows more about the plant than any other person alive, and the force of contract security guards who protect the plant, even to the expense of their lives.
