Deployed to Iraq with his National Guard unit out of Georgia, the author hoped to use his knowledge of the Midddle East and Islam (possessing an M.A. in the subject) to bridge a gap between American soldiers and Iraqi civilians. However, the realities of war quickly challenged his idealism. On a whim, he emailed the Shambhala Buddhist community, finding unexpected guidance in retaining his humanity and compassion as he faced the lethal insanity of war. Upon his return home he faced more challenges with the loss of his mother as well as the end of his marriage. The book is both a military memoir and a story of spiritual transformation.

The War Museum at Oslo

I thought some of you would like to see this poem I wrote after visiting The War Museum at Oslo. It was published by Finishing Line Press, a small press that publishes only chapbooks by women. They do a beautiful job. This one has sparkly endpapers and a satin ribbon book mark as part of the presentation.

FROM GEORDIE LAND TO NO MANS LAND

From Geordie Land to No Mans Land By George Russell Elder

BOOK WAS NOT WRITTEN BY ELDER. Was written  by descendents; published 2011, Authorhouse. After the war, George made several unsuccessful attempts to have his diaries published and shortly before his death he passed them to Mabel his youngest daughter. Several years later other members of his family including his granddaughters deciphered, edited and arranged with Authorhouse to have them finally published.
